Letter From the Director

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to the Austin Children’s Choir! For those of you who are new to the choir, we are so excited that you have chosen to join the oldest children’s chorus in Austin. If you are a returning member, welcome back to another great year of making music! The season ahead of us is the largest in many years and will be filled with fun, new experiences, incredible music, and exciting challenges. The Staff, Board of Directors, and supporters of this organization are ready to begin this year with you.

Music continues to be one of the greatest outlets for people of any age, race, socio-economic status, and family background. Research suggests that students who participate in musical ensembles achieve at a higher level in school, are more creative, and are better prepared for the quickly changing job market. The Austin Children’s Choir is designed to enhance previous musical skills, help students begin reading music, sing with an open and healthy tone, and develop a high level of musicianship.

This season, we will continue to develop the musical skills of our singers through a rigorous music reading and ear training curriculum, advanced musical selections, and exciting performance opportunities. Our 31st Season is quickly filling up with exciting performance opportunities that will challenge everyone involved in the organization, but will make for an extremely memorable season. I am personally excited about our return to the Texas Book and Pecan Street Festivals, our invitation to perform for the Dell Children’s Hospital Gala in January, and our involvement as a collaborative partner in the combined performance of Leonard Bernstein’s “Mass” in June 2018. Other opportunities this year include working with six Texas State University students as our interns, the addition of Jack Wild’s as our Composer in Residence, and our collaborations with Chorus Austin and The Austin Discovery School.

Again, thank you for providing your child with the opportunity to make music and learn with students from around Austin. I look forward to getting to know all of you and to help keep Austin singing!
